A New Jersey man faces up to 10 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to traffic in unlicensed drugs, and failure to report suspicious packages to his pharmacy.
John M. Haines, 26, is facing an additional 10 years in prison. He is scheduled to receive a prison sentence between 20 and 26 years.
The victim was working at Walmart in New Jersey from the age of 18 to 28. Her family's business was established in the early 1990s in the West New York district. When the victim asked for an abortion, she was directed to another location and was asked to return to the Walmart store, where she learned her family had received the abortion.
When Haines was questioned about the woman's behavior, he stated that he thought the victim should have been given permission to have the abortion. Haines then told the victim he had been given permission by Walmart to have the abortion, and that Walmart was not doing business as expected.
Haines admitted to using a stolen computer and computer equipment to facilitate an unlicensed abortion and to be a pharmacist for the retailer. He admitted to selling prescription drugs, including Nexium, and other counterfeit drugs that were shipped to consumers.
The victim told the officer that the woman had bought her abortion prescription through a pharmacy, but that the pharmacy had not offered her any money for the abortion. Haines admitted to selling prescription drugs, including Nexium, to consumers without any intent to profit from the purchase.
Haines was also charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. He was also charged with two counts of failure to report suspicious packages to the victim.
The victim's family had been trying to get her and her children to travel to New Jersey to visit a family and care for their daughter.
In April 2009, the victim had returned to the store and discovered a package of Nexium containing 20,000 tablets of the antibiotic Prilosec, which he had bought from the Walmart pharmacy.
Haines was sentenced to 10 years for the conspiracy to traffic in unlicensed drugs and two years for failure to report suspicious packages.
